Is that puddle from the fridge, and how bad is it
A wet spot near the refrigerator almost always comes from one of three places: the ice maker supply line, a clogged defrost drain, or the water filter housing. Unplug the fridge if the cord is dry and clear of the puddle, then close the small supply valve behind or under it if you can reach it.
Mop up what you see, but do not stop there. Water from an appliance leak runs along the floor, finds the gap under the cabinet base, and soaks into the subfloor out of sight. A water damage cleanup visit is mostly about finding that hidden water.
The usual suspects behind a refrigerator leak
Ice maker supply line
A thin plastic or braided line that feeds the ice maker. It cracks at the fitting or at a kink behind the unit, and it can drip for weeks.
Clogged defrost drain
Melt water is meant to flow to a pan under the fridge. When the drain freezes or clogs, water backs up and spills out the bottom.
Drain pan overflow
The pan is shallow and catches evaporating water. A tilted fridge, a cracked pan, or a long leak lets it brim over onto the floor.
The supply line leak is the most damaging because it is under pressure and runs whenever the ice maker fills. The drain issues are usually slower. All three produce Category 1 water at the start, but it turns dirtier with time as it sits under cabinets and picks up kitchen grime.
Pulling the fridge out safely
- Unplug the unit, and leave it unplugged until the floor and cord are dry.
- Close the water supply valve and unscrew the line from the fridge.
- Empty the food into coolers so the door stays shut and the shelves are light.
- Tilt the fridge slightly and slide it straight out. Use cardboard or a moving blanket under it to protect the flooring.
- Check the floor behind the unit and the wall for a damp line or soft spots.
Do not drag a refrigerator over wet vinyl or laminate, because that is how a small leak becomes a torn floor. If it is a heavy side by side with water around it, wait for two people or for the crew.
What flooring survives a slow appliance leak
| Flooring | Usually survives if | Often needs replacing if |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic or porcelain tile | Water stays on the surface and grout dries | Subfloor underneath is swollen or soft |
| Sheet vinyl | Leak was caught within a day or two | Water got under the seams and trapped there |
| Laminate | Spill was removed immediately | Edges swell or the planks lift apart |
| Engineered or solid wood | Dried promptly with meter checks | Boards cup and stay cupped after drying |
| Carpet and pad | Clean water, extracted and dried quickly | Water sat for days or smells musty |
Laminate and vinyl plank are the least forgiving in kitchens because they have a core that swells and a seam where water can hide. Tile does well, but the subfloor under it is still worth testing.
Not sure how far the water went?
Our crews bring moisture meters and thermal cameras to find water you cannot see. Call dispatch to set up an inspection.
Call (909) 505-3870Hidden moisture under cabinets and toe-kicks
The toe-kick is the recessed strip at the bottom of a cabinet. It looks like a minor trim piece, but behind it sits an open channel where leaked water collects against the particleboard cabinet base. Particleboard swells and crumbles when it stays wet.
A technician can pop off a toe-kick, drill a small test hole or use a thermal imaging camera to see cool, wet patches. If cabinet bases or the wall cavity behind them hold moisture, crews set drying equipment such as air movers and injectidry panels so the cabinets do not have to come out. If the base has already softened, replacement is the honest answer.
Check the dishwasher and sink supply lines nearby too. A fridge leak sometimes gets blamed for water that came from the neighboring appliance.
If you rent, tell the landlord today
Report the leak in writing as soon as you find it, and attach your photos. A leak you hid or ignored can become a dispute, while one reported promptly shows you acted in good faith. Do not try to repair building plumbing yourself, and do not move the landlord's appliance without asking if it is heavy or built in.
Renters insurance can matter here for your belongings, such as food, rugs or a floor lamp. Ask your insurer what it covers and what your lease says. Keep your photos and any messages with the landlord in one folder.
When to call a pro
- The leak ran for days or weeks, or you do not know how long.
- The floor feels soft, springy or has lifted at the edges.
- You smell something musty near the fridge or under the sink.
- Water appears on the other side of a wall, or in the room below.
- You need documentation for a landlord or insurance claim.
For an urgent leak that is still running, emergency water removal gets the water out quickly, and the drying phase follows. Insurers often treat sudden and accidental leaks differently from long, slow ones, so ask yours and keep receipts for emergency steps.
Water Damage Notes for Loma Linda
When you call for help, give the dispatcher your cross streets. Loma Linda addresses sit along Mountain View Avenue, Barton Road and Redlands Boulevard, with Interstate 10 running along the edge of the city, and a clear landmark such as Loma Linda University Medical Center helps a crew find the right block quickly.
The city has 13 developed parks, and many homes and apartments sit on small side streets near them. If your building has several entrances, say which door and unit. That detail saves a crew from circling a complex while water keeps soaking in.
Nearby cities we cover
Crews also serve the neighborhoods to the north and east. Our San Bernardino water damage page lists the ZIP areas we cover there, and the Redlands service page does the same to the east.
Refrigerator leak questions
How long can a fridge leak go before the floor is ruined?
Hard surfaces like tile can take weeks if the subfloor stays dry. Laminate and wood can show damage in a day or two. A small drip that runs for months can rot a cabinet base without leaving a visible puddle.
Can a leaking refrigerator cause mold?
Mold needs moisture, and a hidden fridge leak provides it. Drying wet materials within about 24 to 48 hours helps prevent growth. Questions about testing belong to an independent tester.
Is a fridge leak covered by homeowners insurance?
A sudden failure such as a burst supply line is often covered, while slow seepage over a long time often is not. Check your policy and ask your insurer before you decide.
Should I replace the fridge or fix the line?
A supply line or a drain clog is usually a cheap fix compared with the appliance. If water came from inside the fridge body, such as a cracked tank, ask an appliance technician.
Who do I call in Loma Linda if a refrigerator leak soaked my rental unit's floor?
Tell your landlord in writing first, then call a restoration crew if the water spread under flooring. Our dispatch can start drying while the landlord arranges the appliance repair.
